Typical Trim Uses
1. Fascia
A horizontal board of vertical face, usually below the edge of the roof and attached to the roof rafter tails. These boards are usually 6″ to 8″ wide.
2. Batten
A thin strip of moulding used to cover seams between exterior cladding panels. Battens can also be placed decoratively between seams to create additional architectural detail.
3. Garage Door Trim
Exterior trim surrounding the left, top and right of garage doors.
4. Rake Board or Shingle Mold
A trim board that is attached at the top front of the fascia trim board to support the overhang of the roof shingles and to protect the fascia from water drips. This board is usually 2″ – 4″ wide.
5. Frieze Board
A horizontal board, usually 2″ – 6″ wide that sets flat against the wall below the soffit. Its purpose is to cover the gap between the soffit and wall, or, the gap between the soffit and brick.
6. Window Trim
Exterior trim surrounding the perimeter of windows. Other examples are decorative use of exterior trim board for windows like half rounds, arches, and framework.
7. Door Trim and Fluted Door Casing
Exterior moulding or trim surrounding the left, top and right of doors. Fluted door casing can include decoratively embellished door trim that provides enhanced details to the structural style.
8. Architectural Porch Detail
Decorative elements that add curb appeal to a wide range of structural styles.
9. Column Wrap
Non-structural trim elements added to column supports that add interest to the support and provide style enhancement to the exterior.
10. Soffit
The finished underside of an eave or the underside of a beam, lintel or arch.
11. Shutters
Shutters can be functional, providing light control, privacy, security and protection from the elements, or purely decorative elements adding texture and color to the exterior.
12. Corner Board
Found on the inside or outside corners. An exterior trim board used to protect the ends of siding and/or as a finishing detail.
13. Belly Band or Band Board
A trim board that is used horizontally across the side of a wall as an architectural detail. It is typically used between the 1st and 2nd story plate line or at the bottom of the first-floor plate line.
